Assembling the rows.

The first set of instructions is for the advanced quilt layout. Lay out your blocks in a way you like. I moved mine around a couple of times before deciding on the final arrangement. :) Stitch the top four blocks together in a row. Stitch the bottom four blocks together in a row.
The two blocks to the right and left of the center block will be joined in pairs, one above the other. See picture.

Border for Center Block

Rose Tone on tone
Cut THREE strips (2 1/2) X WOF.
Cut ONE strip into TWO pieces (20 1/2) inches long.
Cut the other TWO strips (24 1/2) inches long.
Stitch a (20 1/2) inch strip to each side of the center star. Press seams towards the rose border.
Stitch the (24 1/2) inches to the remaining two sides of the center block. Again press towards the border.

Putting together the Quilt Body

Stitch the two left blocks to the center. Then stitch the right pair of blocks to the center as well.
Then attach the top and bottom rows. Press these seams towards center block.

Inner Border

Custard Tone on tone – Cut SIX strips of fabric (2 1/2) inches X WOF. Sew three strips together and cut TWO strips (48) inches long. Sew the remaining three strips together and cut TWO strips (52 1/2) inches long.

Stitch the (48 1/2) inches strips to the sides of the quilt. Finish the inner border by stitching the (52 1/2) inch strips to the top and bottom of the quilt.

Outer Border

Brown Suede Large Floral – Cut SEVEN strips of fabric (6 1/2) inches X WOF. Sew three strips together and cut TWO strips (52 1/2) inches long. Sew the remaining four strips into pairs of two and cut TWO strips (64 1/2) inches long.

Stitch the (52 1/2) inches strips to the sides of the quilt. Finish the outer border by stitching the (64 1/2) inch strips to the top and bottom of the quilt.

I must tell you all how happy I am that so many people have participated! I am so excited to see all your photos in the flickr group, and I can not wait to see all the completed quilts! Please continue to send pictures of your Summer Star Sampler Quilts. :)

Do you remember these fabrics? These are the yummy fat quarters that I won on Linda Lum deBono’s Blog waaaaaaay back. The fabric line is called Inspiration.
This is quilt that I made from the lovely fat quarters. I absolutely love this quilt! It might be the simplest pattern EVER! In fact I was able to cut out and sew this quilt in one evening! (around three hours to be exact) This pattern is ideal for a last minute gift, or just a simple, no brainer type of project.
I have just added this beginner quilt pattern to my Etsy shop. Grab yours today, and have a new quilt tomorrow!

Rose Small floral
Cut EIGHT squares of (3 3/8) X (3 3/8) inches. Cut each square in half diagonally to yield SIXTEEN squares.

Piecing Center Block

First we will construct the outer corners of the block. The fabrics here are the brown suede template A and TWO of the chantilly 2 1/2 inch triangle. Lay out fabrics as shown. Mark center on both fabrics, and align before stitching.

Next fabric needed is the 1 3/4 inch chantilly triangles. Mark the center and stitch to one end as shown in the picture. Press towards the brown fabric. Make FOUR of these units.
For the next section of the corner, the fabrics needed are brown suede template B and TWO of the chantilly 2 1/2 inch triangle. Mark the center and stitch a triangle to each side of the brown suede patch. Press towards the brown fabric. Make FOUR of these units.
To make the next section the fabrics needed are the brown suede Template C patches and TWO (2 7/8) inch triangles. Align the patches as shown in the picture and stitch. Press towards the brown fabric. Make FOUR of these units.
Here is the layout for the entire corner patch. You will need the three template patches, plus FOUR of the rose floral 3 3/8 inch triangles.

The top row. Lay out a template A patch plus one of the rose triangles and stitch together as shown.

The center row consists of Template B patch plus TWO rose triangles. Stitch a triangle to each side of the patch as shown. NOTE the different orientation of the triangles.

The bottom row is made from the Template C patches and a rose triangle. Stitch the triangle to the patch as shown in the picture.

Lay out the three rows as shown in the picture. Align the intersecting seams and stitch the three rows together.

Make four corner units.

Now to make Half square triangle units with the (6 1/4) inch brown suede square and a (6 1/4) inch chantilly square.

Press the seams towards the brown fabric.

Cut each half square triangle in half diagonally to yield FOUR smaller two color triangles.
NOW LET”S PUT IT ALL TOGETHER!!

To assemble the two smaller corner units the fabrics needed are TWO (6 1/4) inch brown triangles and TWO (5 7/8) inch chantilly triangles. Lay out the patches as shown in the picture.

Start by stitching the brown triangles to the chantilly triangles. Press towards the brown fabric.

Stitch the TWO brown/chantilly units to each side of the outer corner unit.

Make two of these units.

Stitch the TWO outer corners to the center block you made last week.

All we have left is make the remaining outer corners!! Layout your remaining patches as shown in the picture.

This time you will stitch the two color triangles to the chantilly triangles. Press towards the brown fabric.

Stitch those triangle units to the outer corner unit. Make two.

EEEEEK! Are you excited yet? I AM!!! Stitch the two remaining sections to the center section.

Here it is! The last and final block for the center of the quilt. This block should measure 20.5 inches square.

These are all my blocks laid out together…. I’m still fiddling with the layout, but I’m loving all the blocks together!
It is a good idea to square all your blocks at this time. The smaller blocks will measure 12.5 inches square, and the center will be 20.5. The remaining instructions include the center block border, plus the outer borders of the quilt.

I must tell you all how happy I am that so many people have participated! I am so excited to see all your photos in the flickr group, and I can not wait to see all the completed quilts! Please continue to send pictures of your Summer Star Sampler Quilts. :)

Center Block

There are several templates used for this block. In today’s post, I will give the first two which make up the center of the block. Download Templates ONE and TWO HERE!

Cutting Directions for Block Eleven

Rose dot
Cut FOUR of Template ONE.
Custard tone on tone
Cut FOUR of Template TWO.

Piecing Center Block

The first step is to sew the two different shapes together into four pairs. Begin with one of each fabric.

Place the template TWO piece, right side facing the template ONE piece, lining up the edge as shown in picture. Stitch down the aligned edge, slowly and carefully. These are bias edges and can easily stretch if you are not careful. Press towards the darker fabric.
These four pairs will create the four corners of the block. Next sew the top two together, then the bottom two.
Now stitch the top pair to the bottom pair, taking care to match the center carefully.
Yay! One step closer to finishing the center block!
Thank you so much to everyone for their patience while waiting for these tutorials! :) We have been a very busy family these past few weeks with lots of big changes and adjustments to our schedules. I will do my best to get the remaining instructions out to you by the end of the week. BIG HUGS TO YOU ALL!!

Here are some alternate directions for block 12 which do not use the template from the earlier directions. IF you would still like to use the template, You can download the NEW and IMPROVED template HERE! :)
Cut your rose center square to measure (3 1/4) X (3 1/4) inches. Cut TWO brown rectangles (3 1/4) X (2) inches. Cut TWO brown rectangles (6 1/4) X (2) inches.
Stitch the two smaller rectangles to opposite sides of the center square. Press seams outwards.
Stitch the two larger rectangles to the remaining sides of the center square. Press seams outwards. This center will now measure 6 1/4 inches square.
Continue following the directions in the previous Block 12 post to finish the block.

This is my Circle of life Quilt. It has been in progress for…. well longer than I would like to admit! At this point, I have to cut out the background fabric, attach the outer New York Beauty arches to it, then make the saw tooth border. I AM SO CLOSE!!!! So I thought I would share a pic to boast about my progress, and hopefully that will motivate me to finish it up this week!!

Custard Ticking –
Cut TWO squares (5 1/4) X (5 1/4) inches.
Cut ONE square twice on the diagonal to yield FOUR triangles.

Piecing Instructions for Block TWELVE

The first step is to make the center square with mitred corners..
Fabrics needed for this step are:

FOUR template cut patches of brown floral, and
ONE (3 3/8) X (3 3/8) inch squares of Rose Medallion.
Start by stitching one template patch to the side of the rose square. The rose square will be slightly longer than the brown template patch.

Mark the center of the square and mark the center of the template patch. Align these markings and pin in place.

Begin stitching a quarter inch from the edge, and stop stitch a quarter inch before the end.

Repeat with the opposite side and press these two seams outwards, towards brown fabric.

Attach the remaining two sides, making sure the attached sides are tucked out of the way. Press these two sides towards square center.
Here is a peek of the center block, before the corners are mitred.

To line up the sides for mitering, fold the center block diagonally.
Pin the sides together, starting closest to the center rose fabric. Begin stitching closest to the center, beginning a quarter inch from the start of the seam. Stitch out to the end, DO NOT stop a quarter inch early.

Now finish the remaining three corners.
A close up of the corner.
Now to make TWO half square triangles, for the star points. You will need the custard ticking (5 1/4) X (5 1/4) inch square, and the sea glass sprinkles (5 1/4) X (5 1/4) inch square. Mark both squares with TWO diagonal lines.
Place right sides facing, and stitch on both sides of one marked line. Cut on the marked line to yield TWO half square triangles.
Cut both squares in half diagonally to yield FOUR two color triangles.
Using TWO of the sea glass (4 1/2) inch squares, create two block corners with the two color triangles. Layout patches as shown and stitch together.
Now to make the remaining two corners. You will need the last TWO sea glass (4 1/2) inch squares, and the FOUR custard ticking triangles. Layout fabrics as shown, and stitch together.
Stitch one of these corner units to opposite sides of the center square.
To finish the block, layout in three rows and stitch together.
Now CELEBRATE!! Your first twelve blocks are DONE!!!

Please send me any questions you may have regarding this quilt along. I would love to hear your comments and suggestions!

A very special and HUGE thank you goes out to FatQuarterShop.Com for their enthusiasm and support of this project!

9 Aug 2010

Happy Monday my Quilty Friends!
I hope you are all excited tomorrow’s tutorial for the final two blocks in the Summer Star Sampler, I know I am! Today, I want to get you all ready by giving you instructions on how to work with quilting templates. Block twelve has a patch that will be cut out using a template, but not to worry! It’s easy peasy! So here it goes….

The first thing you will do, is print off the template you will be using. Cut it out, being very careful to stay directly on the line.

Here is my template, after I’ve cut it out.
Next I will use a glue stick and attach my paper template to a piece of light cardboard. Then cut it out again. I will label my template with the pattern name, plus add the grain direction arrow.
This particular template should be laid out parallel to the selvage. This will keep the long edges stable, while only the diagonal edges will be bias.
Ahem. Cough, cough. As you can see, you should be more careful with your template than I was. This happened on my VERY FIRST CUT!!
After preparing and making a second template, here is my first patch of fabric cut out.
Mark the stitching lines on your fabric as shown on your template.
There you have it! If you have any questions on how to use templates, don’t hesitate to contact me!

Quilty Hugs,
Bradie
