For this project you will need:
16 Squares 5X5 16 Squares 2.5 X 2.5 Fat Quarter for Backing Fat Quarter size of Batting |
Lay your squares out, 4 by 4. Lay them out
randomly or organize them in a pattern if you
like.
|
Sew block one onto two. Then sew block three onto
four. Then join the 2 sets of double squares.
|
Here you see the first 2 squares - right sides
facing.
|
Here you see the 2 sets of double squares - right
sides together. Use a quarter inch seam allowance
when piecing all the squares.
|
When pressing, alternate the direction of the
seam allowance. For example Row 1 press to the
left, and row 2 press toward the right
|
This photo shows the direction of the seam
allowance.
|
Sew all four rows. Here you see two rows right
sides together.
|
These are fork pins. Use them to pin both sides
of the seam when you are matching intersecting
seams.
|
When joining the rows together, match up the
seams with each other.
|
Here you see the fork pin on either side of the
seam that will be matched up.
|
This picture shows the 2 rows pinned together
with the fork pins.
|
Another picture showing the pinning of the rows.
|
Join the first 2 rows together. Join rows 3 and 4
together. Use pins to match the seams and sew
with a quarter inch seam allowance.
|
This picture is showing the quarter inch seam
allowance.
|
Finish joining the quilt top by sewing the middle
seam.
|
Once the rows are all joined, press the
horizontal seam allowances all in the same
direction. These seams are all pressed upward.
|
Fold the 2.5 inch squares in half with right
sides of fabric facing. Sew along the long side
of the piece. Turn the 'tube' right side out.
Press these pieces flat with the seam off to one
side.
|
Mark each square in the center all around the
outside of the quilt. This is where you will
attach the tags.
|
This is another picture showing where to attach
the tags.
|
Fold each tag in half the long way. Center the
tag over the markings that you have made. Let the
tag hang over the edge of the quilt about 1/4
inch. Pin in place.
|
Laying out the tags to pin onto the quilt.
|
Close up of the tags pinned in place. Here you
can see the tag hang over the edge of the quilt
by 1/4 inch.
|
Pin all the tags in place.
|
Sew around the outside of the quilt using 1/8
inch seam allowance.
|
Once the tags are secured with the first line of
stitching, go back and zig zag over each tag.
This will give the tags extra security into the
seam.
|
Now lay out your batting. Next is the quilt top,
with the right side up. Last will be the backing,
with right side down.. Pin around the outside of
the quilt to keep in place. Leaving an opening
about 4 inches, stitch around the outside using
1/4 inch seam allowance.
|
ANother look at the layers in the quilt sandwich.
|
Carefully trim the corners in the seam allowance.
DO NOT cut into your stitches!
|
Pull the quilt right side out. Carefully push out
the corners using a point turner or a chopstick.
Do not press too hard or your tool will come
right through. the corner.
|
Keep turning the quilt right side out.
|
Here you can see the opening. Fold the edges
along the opening to the inside 1/4 inch to match
the seam allowance.
|
Press around the outside of your quilt. Press
carefully around the opening to keep the raw
edges inside.
|
This is after pressing.
|
After pressing, carefully stitch the opening
closed. Top stitch around the outside of the
quilt using matching thread and quarter inch seam
allowance.
|
I quilted an 'X' into each square which will
create diamonds over the whole quilt. Here you
can see the finished quilt and the quilting that
was done.
|
Finished! This is the back of the little quilt.
You can see the diamonds quilted into the squares
really well.
